Simone Dalla Bella (junior IUF) is professor at Montpellier-1 University and was hired in EuroMov (M2H research unit) in 2011. He develops research on sensorimotor coupling in vocal performance, rhythm performance, and gait rehabilitation through music.
His IUF project (2012-2017) is entitled Coupling movement to rhythm of auditory stimuli for gait rehabilitation in neurodegenerative disorders. Neurodegenerative disorders are a major challenge for the Health Care System, with more than 900 000 cases of patients with Alzheimer’s disease and 200 000 with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in France only. The deficits exhibited by these patients are not confined to cognitive functioning. Gait dysfunctions, the major cause of falls, can lead to loss of autonomy and institutionalization. Simone’s research project answers to the urgent need of improving/developing strategies for rehabilitating gait in patients suffering from PD and dementia. The IUF project is articulated around two main goals: 1) improving the existent methods for gait rehabilitation in PD patients (by using different kinds of auditory cues), 2) testing the possibility of rehabilitating gait in patients with dementia. The project will allow defining the appropriate protocol for assessing sensitivity to auditory cueing in patients with dementia. The patients will be submitted to a rehabilitation program via auditory cueing. The effect of the program on motor, sensorimotor, and cognitive functioning, as well as the associated changes in terms of brain plasticity will be examined.

Simone Dalla Bella (junior IUF)  est professeur à l’Université Montpellier-1, recruté en 2011 au sein de l’unité M2H du centre EuroMov. Ses travaux de recherche portent sur le couplage sensorimoteur lors des performances vocales et rythmiques, et la rééducation de la marche par la musique. Son projet IUF pour les années 2012-2017 s’intitule « Couplage du mouvement au rythme d’un stimulus auditif pour la rééducation de la marche dans les maladies neurodégénératives ». Les maladies dégénératives constituent un des défis majeurs de Santé Publique, avec seulement en France plus que 900 000 cas de patients souffrant de la maladie d’Alzheimer et 200 000 de la maladie de Parkinson (MP). Les troubles de ces patients ne se limitent pas à la sphère cognitive. Les déficits de la marche, cause principale des chutes, peuvent amener à la perte d’autonomie et à l’institutionnalisation. Le proejt de Simone répond au besoin urgent d’améliorer/développer des stratégies de rééducation de la marche chez le patient souffrant de la MP et de démence. La méthode utilisée (indiçage auditif) consiste en la présentation d’un stimulus auditif rythmique pendant la marche, amenant à son amélioration (e.g., une augmentation de vitesse). Le projet s’articule autour de deux objectifs principaux : 1) améliorer les méthodes existantes de rééducation de la marche par indiçage chez le patient Parkinsonien (avec différents types d’indices), 2) tester la possibilité de rééducation de la marche chez le patient avec démence. Les patients seront soumis à un programme de rééducation par indiçage. Les bienfaits du programme sur les plans moteur, sensorimoteur et cognitif, aussi bien que les changements associés en termes de plasticité cérébrale seront examinés.

A good start for EuroMov in 2012 !

Un bon départ pour EuroMov en 2012 !

At this time last year, we launched the very first issue of the EuroMov newsletter. It is incredible how time flies; in many ways it seems like it was just yesterday. But what is also incredible is the amount of work done and progress made by the EuroMov team over the past twelve months! From fundamental research in human movement to training and innovation in health-oriented technology, so much has been accomplished since we launched the first newsletter. This second edition is dedicated to detailing these important steps that have moved this exciting project forward.  Speaking of moving forward, the construction of the EuroMov building (2500 m2 in the city of Montpellier in the south of France) that began last fall is now in full swing (more details in the last article of the newsletter).  In fact, we celebrated the cornerstone ceremony just a few days ago!  We plan to move into our new location, in just one year, so you can imagine what the major themes of our next newsletter will be !

We hope that this will be an ambitious and productive 2012 for all of you !

L’année dernière à la même période, nous lancions le premier numéro de la newsletter EuroMov. Le temps passe incroyablement vite, nous avons l’impression que c’était hier. Tout aussi incroyable est le travail accompli par l’équipe EuroMov au cours des 12 derniers mois. Entre le développement technologique et la recherche fondamentale sur le mouvement humain, en passant par les activités de training et l’innovation en technologie pour la santé, de nombreux chantiers ont avancé depuis un an. Ils sont détaillés dans ce second numéro. En parlant de chantier, je ne peux résister au plaisir de vous informer de la pose de la première pierre de notre nouveau bâtiment (2500 m2 à Montpellier dans le sud de la France) qui a eu lieu il y a quelques jours. La construction du bâtiment EuroMov a démarré en effet cet automne et avance maintenant à grand pas. L’emménagement est prévu dans un an, et vous devinez l’esprit dans lequel le troisième numéro sera composé !

En souhaitant que 2012 réalise vos aspirations,nous vous souhaitons une excellente nouvelle année !

“My background is in music cognition and in the cognitive neuropsychology of music. I arrived at EuroMov after having been the director of a laboratory conducting research work on music performance (Music Performance and Brain Lab, WSFiZ in Warsaw; http://www.mpblab.vizja.pl) for the past seven years. In this context I carried out projects on sensorimotor coupling in vocal performance, rhythm performance, and motion capture studies in skilled performers. I plan to continue these lines of research at EuroMov with a particular interest in using rhythm as a tool for rehabilitating motor disorders. For example, one of the projects recently funded by the Languedoc-Roussillon region will concern the rehabilitation of gait dysfunctions in patients with Parkinson’s disease using rhythmic auditory stimulation. EuroMov is the ideal environment for these projects, given its interdisciplinary character combining both fundamental and applied sciences of movement. And last, but certainly not least, Montpellier is a dynamic and enjoyable city where the sun always shines !”

J’arrive dans EuroMov après avoir dirigé pendant 7 ans un laboratoire à Varsovie conduisant des recherches sur la performance musicale (Music Performance and BrainLab, WSFiZ; http://www.mpblab.vizja.pl). Dans ce contexte, j’ai mené à bien des projets sur le couplage sensorimoteur dans la performance vocale, la performance rythmique, et la capture du mouvement chez le musicien professionnel. Je prévois de continuer ces lignes de recherche dans EuroMov, avec un intérêt particulier pour l’utilisation du rythme dans la rééducation des troubles moteurs. Technological innovation requires the grouping and sharing of knowledge in various scientific and technological domains, and the access of extended competencies including, among others, researchers, physicians and engineers. The EuroMovTechnological Platform — EuroMov-TP — offers scientific accompaniment, material resources and privileged access to the platform devoted to human and humanoid analysis (from biology to robotics to cognition).  Projects and innovations are developed with the centre’s researchers (physiologists, biomechanists, neuroscientists), physicians (gerontologists, sport physicians, re-educators, neurologists, etc…) and engineers (robotics, electronics, information technology, etc…) all specialized in human movement. EuroMov-TP constitutes a decisive step in tomorrow’s innovation. The two innovative concepts of the centre — movement and health — are an integral part of our daily life. This allows the elaboration of solutions in a wide range of domains including:sport, health atwork, health & technology, rehabilitation, serious games, virtual reality, ergonomics, robotics, music and learning.EuroMov-TP’s objective is to provide a fruitful and long-lasting collaboration between universities and their research activity and entrepreneurs who have ideas to develop.In cooperation with several regional partners,EuroMov-TP is able to support projects, provide development solutions as well as foster technological transfers.

MoJOS – Stroke patients addicted to video games

The “Serious Gaming” MoJOS project obtained from the French government in 2009, aims to create a general health-oriented game engine, with a focus on arm rehabilitation after a stroke” .

Le projet de « Jeux Sérieux »  MoJOS, obtenu dans le volet numérique du plan de relance gouvernemental lancé en 2009, a pour objectif de créer un moteur de jeux orienté santé pour la rééducation des patients après un AVC”.

The engine combines the ‘fun’ of playing games with a pedagogical learning scenario and online intelligent agents. The agents automatically adapt the level to a player’s current capacity based on his/her performance.  This is particularly helpful in maintaining a constant level of motivation. The occupational therapist can always modify the game parameters based on the general state of the patient or therapeutic goals.  Serious games offer the possibilityof personalizing the rehabilitation program in the hospital or at home, while increasing motivation by fun and objective game scores.  The MoJOS system includes two simple technologies: a graphical tablet with mouse and the Microsoft Kinect® which tracks hand movements. The selection of material can be adapted to the needs of the patient.

MoJOS is supported by the Languedoc-Roussillon region, Montpellier Agglomeration, Eurobiomed and PixLR.  Fourpartners constitute the MoJOS consortium:
- The Genious Group (e-learning and serious games);
- The IDATE consulting and research centre in Telecom, Internet and Media (market studies & prototype evaluation);
- The Montpellier Laboratory of Informatics, Robotics and Microelectronics – LIRMM (engine development and adaptive intelligent agents);
- The Movement to Health (M2H-UM1) Laboratory at EuroMov and the Montpellier Academic Hospital – CHU (therapeutic concepts of games and scientific validation of the MoJOS system)

Le moteur est orienté santé car les jeux pédagogiques et ludiques conçus sont dotés d’agents intelligents, ils s’adaptent automatiquement et en temps réel aux performances et capacités des patients. L’ergothérapeute a la possibilité de paramétrer chaque séance de jeu en fonction de l’état général de son patient et de son niveau de récupération. Cela permet d’améliorer la personnalisation du programme de rééducation par le jeu sérieux. L’idée est de rendre plus attractive et ludique la rééducation après AVC dans un cadre hospitalier mais également à moyen terme, à domicile, afin de pérenniser la pratique du patient.L’architecture MoJOS utilise une technologie simple, peu onéreuse et adaptable au service du thérapeute et de son patient alliant tablette graphique, souris, et dispositifs de capture de mouvement grand public dont Kinect®.

MoJOS est soutenu par la région Languedoc-Roussillon, Montpellier-Agglomération, Eurobiomed et PixLR. Quatre partenaires constituent le consortium :
- Le groupe GENIOUS  (développement du moteur et du jeu de rééducation)
- Le centre de recherche et de consultance IDATE (étude de marché et évaluation du prototype de jeu)
- Le Laboratoire d’Informatique, de Robotique et de Microélectronique de Montpellier – LIRMM (conception de l’architecture du moteur et du modèle de programmation )

The SKILLS Conference : 2 Keynotes, 20 countries, 200 participants

The SKILLS international conference, organized by EuroMov in Montpellier December 15-16, 2011, was a huge success.

La conférence internationale SKILLS, organisée à Montpellier par EuroMov les 15 et 16 Décembre 2011, a été un succès.

200 participants from 20 countries attended the SKILLS conference, held at the CORUM International Convention Centre in Montpellier, France. Our two keynote speakers, Stefan Schaal (University of Southern California, USA) and Scott Kelso (Florida Atlantic University, USA) gave a great conference on primitive movements and human skill acquisition.  Our guest speaker Libor Kral from the European Commission (ICT Cognitive Systems and Robotics) presented the general ICT program and the next call for projects that will soon be announced. All together, 100 communications (oral and posters) were given and eight hands-on demos were presented, six of which were the emblematic demonstrators of the SKILLS European project. The proceedings of the conference have been published by EDP sciences and can be downloaded at http://www.euromov-conferences.eu/. 200 participants en provenance de 20 pays étaient présents au centre de conférences montpelliérain Le CORUM. Nos deux conférenciers invités, Stefan Schaal (Université de Californie du Sud, USA) et Scott Kelso (Université Atlantique de Floride, USA) ont donné de très belles présentations sur les primitives de mouvement et l’acquisition des habiletés humaines, et notre présentateur invité Libor Kral de la commission européenne (ICT Systèmes cognitifs et Robotique) a présenté le programme général ICT et le contenu des prochains appels à projets. Au total, 100 communications orales et affichées ont été présentées, ainsi que 8 démonstrateurs, parmi lesquels les 6 démonstrateurs emblématiques du projet européen SKILLS. Full speed ahead for the construction of the new EuroMov building

Démarrage rapide pour la construction du nouveau bâtiment EuroMov

The construction of the EuroMov building started in October 2011 and is now in full swing.

La construction du bâtiment EuroMov a démarré en Octobre 2011et progresse maintenant à vitesse de croisière.

It was with great enthusiasm and relief that we saw the first trucks arrive on the EuroMov site in October 2011, perfectly on schedule ! The construction period will last 16 months if everything goes smoothly, and we all hope it will. “Tout vabien pour l’instant !” says our architect Orianne Champavier, from the Cusy-Maraval Architectes office in Montpellier. The cornerstone ceremony took place just few days ago, on February 9, 2012, and was the ideal opportunity to welcome, at the actual EuroMov site, all the partners, financial and institutional, who have accompanied the development of the centre since the early phase of the project in 2005.

C’est avec un grand bonheur et soulagement que nous avons vu arriver les premiers engins de chantier sur le site EuroMov en Octobre 2011, parfaitement à l’heure ! La construction va durer 16 mois si tout suit son cours normalement, ce que nous espérons tous. « So far so good » nous confirme notre architecte Orianne Champavier, du cabinet Cusy-Maraval Architectes. La cérémonie de pose de la première pierre a eu lieu il y a quelques jours, le 9 Février 2012, et a été l’occasion d’accueillir sur le site tous les partenaires institutionnels et financiers qui accompagnent le développement du centre depuis la phase initiale du projet en 2005.

As we are seeing the first tangible signs of EuroMov fall into place – notably the design of our new building and the first collaborations between business creators and the M2H Laboratory, we felt that it was important to keep you informed on a regular basis about the latest developments and the progress that is being made on our EuroMov project.  This newsletter is dedicated to providing updates and recent news of each of the five satellites – Research, Technology, Incubation, R&D and Training — which together constitute the first European centre exclusively devoted to human movement.

Of course we welcome any comments and suggestions you may have and would be glad to answer any questions, so please feel free to contact any of our members.

“The University of Montpellier 1 is in the unique position to oversee the installation of EuroMov, the new European centre for research and innovation.

« L’Université Montpellier-1 assure la Maîtrise d’ouvrage du nouveau centre européen de recherche et d’innovation EuroMov.

This ambitious project is important to our institution for a number of reasons.  First, it is part of one of the most important research priorities of UM1 – health!  This project will pave the way to new, promising research through the study of normal and pathological human movement and will provide innovative applications in the domain of handicap, ageing, sports and general physical activity.  Secondly, EuroMov is a perfect illustration of our CAMPUS project – the merging of the different Universities in Montpellier.  EuroMov will be the interface between health (UM1), and information technology (UM2), an interface that is particularly successful and has already been the object of quite a few initiatives (IHU, Labex) in which the EuroMov (M2H) researchers are already implicated.   Finally, the EuroMov centre will include a partnership with a business incubator and will include entrepreneurial projects that are centred on human movement as well as already established businesses that have synergies with the research teams (R&D departments, for example).  This initiative to group together, in the same space, the culture of academic research with that of business is very ambitious, as this concept is not yet well developed in the education system in France.  This project will bring innovative solutions in the fields of physical activity and will offer new perspectives for our students.  This is the principal reason that EuroMov is a key project that epitomizes the UM1-Entreprendre foundation.”

Cet ambitieux projet est important pour notre établissement à plusieurs titres. Tout d’abord, il s’inscrit dans un domaine de recherche prioritaire de l’UM1, celui de la santé. Il doit ouvrir des voies de recherche prometteuses par l’étude de la sensori-motricité humaine normale et pathologique, et fournir des applications novatrices dans le domaine du handicap, de l’avancée en âge, du sport et de l’activité physique en général. Ensuite, il se positionne dans le contexte actuel du projet CAMPUS et de la fusion des universités montpelliéraines à l’interface de la santé (UM1) et technologies de l’information (UM2), secteur d’interface particulièrement porteur et faisant l’objet de plusieurs initiatives d’excellence (IHU, Labex) dans lequel les chercheurs d’EuroMov (unité M2H) sont aujourd’hui impliqués. Enfin, le centre vise à accueillir, en partenariat avec l’incubateur et les pépinières régionales des projets entrepreneuriaux portant sur le mouvement, ainsi que des entreprises déjà créées (bureaux R&D). Cette volonté de rassembler dans un même espace-temps la culture et de la recherche publique et celle de l’entreprise est ambitieuse et encore peu développée en France dans le périmètre universitaire. Elle doit conduire à des solutions innovantes dans les secteurs de l’activité physique et offrir de nouveaux débouchés pour nos étudiants. C’est la raison pour laquelle EuroMov est aujourd’hui une action emblématique de notre fondation UM1-Entreprendre. »
